Intentional Torts
Intentional Torts
Maryland law allows compensation not only for the injuries a person has sustained from intentional torts, but in the proper case, for punitive damages, which provides additional compensation to the victim for the type of injuries sustained, and are designed to punish the wrongdoer and deter future similar action. Assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, false arrest, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, abuse of civil process, libel, and slander each constitutes what the law refers to as “intentional torts” in Maryland. Any number of factual scenarios can amount to an intentional tort, depending on the circumstances. Physical and emotional injuries, as well as financial harm caused by these intentional actions warrant legal representation.
